When a site has got away from you
Grounds work has a step change in it. Up to a point you are cutting one season of growth and the cost tracks the area. Past that point you are removing several years of accumulated growth, and the job changes character completely.
Shrubs need removing rather than trimming. Beds need excavating back out of the turf rather than edging. Hedges need rectification rather than a trim. That is not slightly more expensive, it is a different order of cost, because it is hours of hand labour plus green waste volume plus, often, machinery.
What a clean-up covers
- Removal of overgrown shrub masses and self-seeded growth
- Small tree and sapling removal where growth has encroached on access or structures
- Canopy lifting on established trees to restore clearance over beds, paths and driveways
- Clearing understorey growth from beneath tree groups
- Full bed restoration, with edges re-cut against kerbing, paving and turf
- Bringing overgrown turf and verges back to an even height
- Clearing kerb lines, footpath joints, gate approaches and stormwater grates
- Complete green waste removal from site
It is a reset, not a maintenance plan
We quote clean-ups separately from ongoing work, and we think you should insist on that from any contractor. A quote that folds a large clean-up into an ongoing rate either loses the contractor money or means the clean-up gets cut short.
Once the site is back to baseline, holding it there costs a fraction of the reset, because you are cutting growth rather than removing years of it. If you go back to deferring the work, you will pay for the reset again in a few years.
Honest assessment first
Not every site that looks rough needs a full clean-up. Some just need to go straight onto a schedule. We will walk the site and tell you which, because quoting a clean-up you do not need is a good way to lose a client.
The Crestmead depot case study shows a full site reset, and our article on service schedules covers what deferral actually costs.
